Ignored Biblical Teachings

Many Christians preach the "Christian" lifestyle, that one should live under the guidelines of the Bibles teachings on morals, ethics, and mannerisms.  There are very few people that have not heard the phrase "What would Jesus do?"  Many people often use Biblical verses when condemning another's actions.  I've seen this personally, and in almost every Christian message forum I've ever visited.  Well, it's time for Christians to really live the "Christian" lifestyle, as per the instruction of the Bible.  Nobody wants to ever be considered a hypocrite!

#1.  Divorce

A Christian may NEVER divorce.  The only exception to this rule is when one spouse commits adultery:

Matthew 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.  (KJV;  See also Mark 10:9)

If a Christian were to divorce his wife for any reason other than unchastely, he causes her to commit adultery.    Also, many Christians today may be adulterers without even knowing!  According to the Bible, anyone that marries a divorced woman has committed adultery and vise versa:

Matthew 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.  (KJV)

Mark 10:11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.  (KJV)

Mark 10:12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery. (KJV)

Luke 16:18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.  (KJV)

Matthew 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. (KJV)

Now that we know what the Bible says about divorce, let us see if Christians heed what is commanded:

Denomination (in order of decreasing divorce rate) % who have been divorced
Non-denominational (small conservative groups; independents) 34%
Baptists 29%
Mainline Protestants 25%
Mormons 24%
Catholics 21%
Lutherans 21%

Let's see where Christianity ranks amongst divorce rates by religion:

Religion % have been divorced
Jews 30%
Born-again Christians 27%
Other Christians 24%
Atheists, Agnostics 21%

Donald Hughes, author of The Divorce Reality, states that 90% of divorces among born-agains occurs after they have been saved.

George Barna, president and founder of Barna Research Group, commented: "While it may be alarming to discover that born again Christians are more likely than others to experience a divorce, that pattern has been in place for quite some time. Even more disturbing, perhaps, is that when those individuals experience a divorce many of them feel their community of faith provides rejection rather than support and healing. But the research also raises questions regarding the effectiveness of how churches minister to families. The ultimate responsibility for a marriage belongs to the husband and wife, but the high incidence of divorce within the Christian community challenges the idea that churches provide truly practical and life-changing support for marriages."

Also, let us consider the following:

− 80% of Americans are Christians

− 50% of American marriages will end in divorce

Apparently many Christians choose to disregard this Bible command.  (Note:  above stats come from George Barna's polls).

#2. Head Covering

1 Corinthians 11:4  Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.  (KJV)

You would have a very difficult time finding a man wearing a hat in church.  This is one command that seems to be followed.  Now, if we continue reading in Corinthians, we come across the command for women:

1 Corinthians 11:5  But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.  (6)  For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.  (7)  For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.  (8)  For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.  (9)  Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.  (10)   For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.   (11)  Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.  (12)  For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.  (13)  Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?  (14)  Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?  (15)  But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. (KJV)

Here, it clearly says that woman MUST cover their heads when praying.  Why is it then that women go to Church wearing makeup and styled hair?  Why is the command for men followed, but not the one given to women?  Simply said: "Convenience."  It is easy to take off a hat, it is uncomfortable to wear a veil (both physically and mentally).  Aside from nuns, I've never met a Christian woman that covers her hair when she prays or goes to service.  This command is just as legit as any other found in the New Testament, yet it is often rationalized away.  Excuses are made, not to covince others, but to convince oneself that it is not necessary.  It must be so since these excuses are weak to the point of ridecules.

#3.  Prayer in School

The prayer in school issue has been strongly debated recently.  Many Christians would like to see this implemented into public schools.  Would Jesus (pbuh) approve?  Let us see what the Bible says:

Matthew 6:5  And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.  (6)  But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.  (KJV)

Jesus (pbuh) specifically said to pray in secret.  This should end the debate without argument, but Christians will scream and dance and make excuses that this is metaphorical and should not be taken literally.

  #4.  Long-haired Men

1 Corinthians 11:14  Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?  (KJV)

This verse is clear as day, yet Christians insist on depicting Jesus (pbuh) with long hair (with exceptions i.e., Jehovah's Witnesses).  Also, many Christian men wear their hair long, in direct violation of the above verse.

#5.  Modesty

1 Timothy 2:9  In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; (KJV)

1 Peter 3:3  Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; (KJV)

Just go wait outside any church service, or Christmas party, or shopping or dining areas to see this command violated.  I've seen women walking around with crosses made of Gold that costs more than the average Americans weekly paycheck.

#6.  Silence

1 Corinthians 14:34  Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. (KJV)

To think, there are women trying to have themselves ordained as Catholic Bishops and ministers these days!  They're not even supposed to speak in church.

#7.  Judge Not!

Matthew 7:1  Judge not, that ye be not judged. (KJV)

Luke 6:37  Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:  (KJV)

Just visit any Christian message and you will see a violation of the above command.  Even better, post as a Muslim, atheist, scientologist, JW etc., and some will even flat out condemn you to hell.

#8.  Call No Man Father

Matthew 23:9  And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.  (KJV)

This one is broken on a daily basis.  Catholics should especially take note.

#9.  The Law

Matthew 5:18  For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.  (19)  Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.   (KJV)

Anyone who has ever entered into dialogue with a Christian knows how they bring up all their defenses when it comes to the law.  It's much easier to disregard it.  This verse, along with a few others, are clearly contradicted by Paul.  Heaven and Earth are still here, and there are prophecies that have yet to be fulfilled.  Jesus (pbuh) clearly said that until all is fulfilled, we are to follow the law.  Many Christian readers will shake their heads and say that Jesus (pbuh) fulfilled the law, and that the writer of this article doesn't understand, but I take Jesus (pbuh) words worlds above Paul's, and Jesus (pbuh) said we must follow the law.  Many Christians will gladly quote the Old Testament when it agrees with their argument, even use it in sermons, but when used against them, the familiar defense is used, "The Old Testament doesn't matter anymore, Jesus abolished it with his works on the cross."  Let us now review some other ignored commands from the Old Testament:

#9-1.  Tattoo's

Leviticus 19:28  Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.   (KJV)

28You shall not make any gashes in your flesh for the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord. (NRSV;  see also NIV and many others)

Not only is this command broken very often, but many times people tattoo images of Jesus (Pbuh), Virgin Mary, the Cross, Bible verses etc..

#9-2.  loans with interest

Deuteronomy 23:19 Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon usury:  (20)  Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it.   (KJV)

Someone should tell this to all the Christian banking institutions!

#9-3.  Bastards may not enter

Deuteronomy 23:2  A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD.  (KJV)

This does not sound very just.  Why would someone be blamed for something he has no control over?

 #9-4.  Beards

Leviticus 19:27  Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.   (KJV)

There are other commands, but this small sample should be sufficient in getting the point across.
