Does the Qur'an Teach That The Bible and Torah Is Uncorrupted?
Christian Missionaries now claim that the Qur'an teaches its followers to follow the Bible and Torah. They argue that it also claims those books cannot be corrupted. We will study the verses they use further down, then the verses and Hadith (Sunnah, Traditions of the Prophet) that claim the corruptions of the Bible and Torah, but let's start with some background.
First, a quick lesson on Islam. The word 'Islam' means submission, or submission to the one God. It did not begin with Muhammad (pbuh). Muhammad (pbuh) is the last in of a string of messengers. Muslims believe that the Jews that followed their Prophets, and did not steer off course were righteous. Also, those that followed what Jesus (pbuh) taught were righteous. Jesus was sent to the Jews to lead them back to the straight path, and in that way, he was the Christ, the Messiah, The Savior. The Qur'an also attests to this. Christianity became distorted with such teachings that never existed before, such as trinity, original sin, atonement... Notice, Jews didn't believe in any of this, nor did any of the Prophets teach this. Even the four Gospels don't teach such things. So where did it come from? Believe it or not, the only people that believed in trinity gods, and the atonement of the son god, were the pagans. The Jews sure didn't believe this. To find out more about pagan believes that infiltrated Christianity, check out my history of the trinity page in the Christianity section.
Anyway, all Prophets were Muslims. Muslims are those that submit to the one God. It is possible to be a Jew and a Muslim at once. Moses (pbuh) and his followers, for example, were clearly Jewish, yet they were Muslims because they submitted to God. So, the Jews that did what they were supposed to, followed the uncorrupted laws and the Prophets, were righteous and permitted into heaven by Gods will. Those that followed the teachings of Jesus (pbuh) also were righteous and may be permitted into heaven by Gods Will.
Muhammad (pbuh) was sent to mankind. The Jews had gone astray, the Christians incorporated all sorts of pagan practices and falsity into their religion. It was time to bring them back to the right path. That is were Muhammad (pbuh) came in.
The miracle of the Qur'an is the scientific revelations (although the Qur'an by no means is a book of science.) For more info on this, a good article can be found here: http://www.bigissueground.com/atheistground/asadi-koranscience.shtml
Here are the verses missionaries bring up to make their point:
Qur'an 2:87 "We gave Moses the Scripture and We sent messengers after him in succession. We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear signs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. So how is it that, whenever a messenger brings you something you do not like, you become arrogant, calling some imposters and killing others?"
Not sure how this works in their favor. They don't realize that the question pertains to them and their rejection of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Each scripture sent down is meant to confirm previous scripture (Qur'an 2:89) and that includes the Qur'an (2:97). If the previous scritprue does not match, then it was changed. The Bible has been changed, it is evident when you consider the contradictions, math errors, science errors, unfulfilled prophecy... The Qur'an confirms what parts are true. This alone is sufficient to prove that the Qur'an claims the Torah and Bible have been corrupted, but I will provide more proofs nonetheless.
Another popular verse with these missionaries is the following:
Qur'an 29:46 "[Believers], argue only in the best way with the People of the Book, except with those of them wo act unjustly. Say, 'We believe in what was revealed to us and in what was revealed to you; our God and your God are one [and the same]; we are devoted to him.'
This doesn't prove a thing. Notice that it says to believe in what was revealed to them, and not the corrupted versions of today. Translation alone is a from of corruption, not to mention the fact that nobody can be 100% certain that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John even wrote the gospels attributed. The following books are a few good references for proof of this:
|
"The Five Gospels: What Did Jesus Really Say?" by Funk, Hoover, and The Jesus Seminar. |
|
"Who Wrote the New Testament" By Mack. |
|
"Who Wrote the Gospels?" By Helms. |
|
"Who Wrote the Bible" By Friedman. |
|
"The Book Your Church Doesn't Want You To Read" By Leedom. |
So believing in what was revealed, and what we have today, is two different things.
The next verse is as follows:
Qur'an 32:23 "We gave Moses the Scripture -- so [Muhammad] do not doubt that you are receiving it -- and we made it a guide to the Children of Israel."
This one, if anything, backfires on them. It shows that the Scriptures of Moses (pbuh) was meant as a guide to the Children of Israel. God also told Muhammad (pbuh) not to doubt that he is receiving the Scripture, because Moses (pbuh) also received Scripture before him.
Qur'an 5:44 "We revealed the Torah with guidance and light, and the prophets, who had submitted to God, judged according to it for the Jews. So did the rabbis and the scholars in accordance with that part of God's Scripture which they were entrusted to preserve, and to which they were witnesses. So [rabbis and scholars] do not fear people, fear Me; do not barter away My message for a small price; those who do not judge according to what God has sent down are rejecting [God's teachings]"
This doesn't prove anything, but put it in context, and my how it backfires. Here are the verses before:
Qur'an 5:41 "Messenger, do not be grieved by those who race to surpass one another in disbelief -- those who say with their mouths, 'We believe,' but have no faith in their hearts, and the Jews who listen eagerly to lies and to those who have not even met you, who distort the meanings of [revealed] words and say [to each other], 'If you are given this ruling, accept it, but if you are not, then beware! -- if God intends some people to be so misguided, you will be powerless against God on their behalf. These are the ones whose hearts God does not intend to cleanse --a disgrace for them in this world, and then a heavy punishment in the Hereafter.--42. They listen eagerly to lies and consume what is unlawful. If they come to you [Prophet] for judgment, you can either judge between them, or decline --if you decline, they will not harm you in any way, but if you do judge between them, judge justly: God loves the just -- 43. But why do they come to you for judgment when they have the Torah with God's judgment, and even then still turn away? These are not believers. 44. We revealed the Torah with guidance and light, and the prophets, who had submitted to God, judged according to it for the Jews.
Compare to Jeremiah 8:8. There is the reason the Jews are no longer Gods chosen. If you read down to verse 48, you'll find the following:
"We sent to you [Muhammad] the Scripture with the truth, confirming the Scriptures that came before it, and with final authority over them: so judge between them according to what God has sent down. Do not follow their whims, which deviate from the truth that has come to you. We have assigned a law and a path to each of you. If God had so willed, He would have made you one community, but He wanted to test you through that which he has given you, so race to do good: you will all return to God and He will make clear to you the matters you differed about."
Qur'an 6:154 "Once again, We gave Moses the Scripture, perfecting [Our favor] for those who do good, explaining everything clearly, as guidance and mercy, so that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord. 155. This, too, is a blessed Scripture which We have sent down -- follow it and be conscious of your Lord, so that you may receive mercy--"
If you read the entire chapter, you would find that "Once again" is referring to verses 91-93, which state the following:
"They have no grasp of God's true measure when they say, 'God has sent nothing down to a mere mortal.' Say, 'Who was it who sent down the Scripture, which Moses brought as a light and a guide to people, which you made into separate sheets, showing some but hiding many? You were taught things that neither you nor your forefathers had known.' Say, 'God [sent it down],' then leave them engrossed in their vain talk. 92. This is a blessed Scripture that We have sent down to confirm what came before it and for you to warn the mother of Cities and all around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in this Scripture, and do not neglect their prayers. 93. Who could be more wicked than someone who invents a lie against God, or claims, 'A revelation has come to me,' when no revelation has been sent to him, or says, "I too can reveal something equal to God's revelation'? If you could only see the wicked in their death agonies, as the angels stretch out their hands [to them], saying, 'Give up your souls. Today you will be repaid with a humiliating punishment for saying false things about God and for arrogantly rejecting His revelations.'
Notice verse 54 says "We sent down." There is a difference between what was sent down and what we have today. Other than that, I'll allow the reader to read the entire thing in context and see what it really says.
Just to make it clear, the People of the Book are the Jews and Christians.
Quran 5:68 "Say, 'People of the Book, you have no true basis [for your religion] unless you uphold the Torah, the Gospel, and that which has been sent down to you from your Lord,' but what has been sent down to you [Prophet] from your Lord is sure to increase many of them in their insolence and defiance: do not worry about those who defy [God]. "
What does basis mean? It means foundation. The Torah and the Gospels are indeed a foundation for the Qur'an. The Qur'an is here to confirm them after all.
Qur'an 43:63 "When Jesus came with clear signs he said, 'I have brought you wisdom; I have come to clear up some of your differences for you. Be mindful of God and obey me: 64. God is my Lord and your Lord. Serve Him: this is the straight path.'"
I'm not sure what this is meant to prove. Jesus did come down with clear signs. And Jesus saying that to the Jews of his time, I'm not sure how this relates to the Qur'an telling us to follow the gospels.
Now for the verses that claim the corruption of the Bible and Torah:
Quran 2:79 "So woe to those who write something down with their own hands and then claim, 'This is from God,' in order to make some small gain. Woe to them for what their hands have written! Woe to them for all that they have earned!"
By reading to verse 87, we learn that this pertains to the Scripture of Moses (pbuh) and Jesus (pbuh).
Qur'an 2:59 "But the wrongdoers substituted a different word from the one they had been given. So, because they persistently disobeyed, We sent a plague down from the heavens upon the wrongdoers."
Qur'an 4:157 "and said, 'We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of God.' (They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, though it was made to appear like that to them; those that disagreed about him are full of doubt, with no knowledge to follow, only supposition: they certainly did not kill him--158. God raised him up to Himself. God is almighty and wise. 159.There is not one of the People of the Book who will not believe in [Jesus] before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against him.)"
The verse states "with no knowledge to follow, only supposition" yet what is it that the Christians follow? The Bible. In other words, the bible is full of supposition, which would be the result of a corrupted book. It's hard to distinguish between what is original and what was added by man.
Qur'an 48:29 "Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who follow him are harsh towards the disbelievers and compassionate towards each other. You see them kneeling and prostrating, seeking God's bounty and His good pleasure: on their faces they bear the marks of their prostrations. This is how they are pictured in the Torah and the Gospel: like a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises on its stem to the delight of its sowers. So God infuriates the disbelievers through them; God promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who believe and do righteous deeds."
This is actually an acid test. The Torah or Gospels, if uncorrupted would include the following verse: "like a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, grows thick, and rises on its stem to the delight of its sowers. So God infuriates the disbelievers through them; God promises forgiveness and a great reward to those who believe and do righteous deeds."
The closest to be found in the entire bible is Mark 4:27, which doesn't even come close. The Qur'an states in many places, and using man methods that the Torah and Gospel have been corrupted. The Old Testament book of Jeremiah does the same on chapter 8 verse 8.
Now here are some Hadith that state the corruption of the earlier books:
| Narrated Ubaidullah: "Ibn 'Abbas said, "Why do you ask the people of the scripture about anything while your Book (Quran) which has been revealed to Allah's Apostle is newer and the latest? You read it pure, undistorted and unchanged, and Allah has told you that the people of the scripture (Jews and Christians) changed their scripture and distorted it, and wrote the scripture with their own hands and said, 'It is from Allah,' to sell it for a little gain. Does not the knowledge which has come to you prevent you from asking them about anything? No, by Allah, we have never seen any man from them asking you regarding what has been revealed to you!" (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Holding Fast to the Qur'an and Sunnah, Volume 9, Book 92, Number 461)" |
| The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: Whatever the people of the Book [Jews and Christians] tell you, do not verify them, nor falsify them, but say: We believe in Allah and His Apostle. If it is false, do not confirm it, and if it is right, do not falsify it. (Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud, Knowledge (Kitab Al-Ilm), Book 25, Number 3637)" |
| Narrated AbuNamlah al-Ansari: "When he was sitting with the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and a Jew was also with him, a funeral passed by him. He (the Jew) asked (Him): Muhammad, does this funeral speak? The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Allah has more knowledge. The Jew said: It speaks. |
| Narrated Abu Huraira: "The people of the Book used to read the Torah in Hebrew and then explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. Allah's Apostle said (to the Muslims). 'Do not believe the people of the Book, nor disbelieve them, but say, 'We believe in Allah and whatever is revealed to us, and whatever is revealed to you.' ' (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Holding Fast to the Qur'an and Sunnah, Volume 9, Book 92, Number 460)" |
| Narrated Ubaidullah: "Ibn 'Abbas said, 'Why do you ask the people of the scripture about anything while your Book (Quran) which has been revealed to Allah's Apostle is newer and the latest? You read it pure, undistorted and unchanged, and Allah has told you that the people of the scripture (Jews and Christians) changed their scripture and distorted it, and wrote the scripture with their own hands and said, 'It is from Allah,' to sell it for a little gain.
