Qu'ran

Because of all the differeing opinions about what the Qu'ran says I thought I would try to read parts of it myself. I found two sites that have it online. <http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/001.qmt.html> & <http://www.muslim.org/english-quran/quran.htm>. One site seems to have three different translations. How do I know which is the correct translation to read? Do you have any suggestions?

Translations are a problem.  Actually, the Qur'an is only considered the Qur'an only when written in Arabic, because it's the exact words as revealed.  No matter what the case, something is always lost in translation.  Can you imagine Shakespear in Chinese or Arabic?  Either way, I really like M.A.S. Abdel Haleem's translation from Oxford Classic, because he attempts to translate it by meaning rather than word.  When I read his, it reminds me more of the Arabic Qur'an than any other translation.  I would gladly be willing to purchase one on Amazon and have it shipped to you, but if you don't want to disclose your information, then this one is popular:

I don't really like some of his translations, such as the word Awliyaa' to friends.  I don't really understand how he managed that, but the word isn't a faithful translation.  There is actually a post about this on this forum, and I speak more of it in the Qur'an section.

I would suggest you skip around.  The second Chapter is very long, it is best to come back to this one.  The 17th is usually a good place to start.

Peace be with you

Tarek

In the beginning of Surah 2 the words, Unseen, Revelation and Faith are capitalized. Am I to assume then that these words refer to names attributed to God?

Not sure, my translation doesn't capitalize it.  Also, Arabic doesn't have capitalization.  So, I guess it's something the translator chose to do.  To find out more about the attributes of God in Islam, check out this link:  http://www.islamic.org.uk/cncptgod.html
